FRANCHISE FUNDAMENTALS
Understanding the franchise business model
The relationship behind the brand: how franchisors and franchisees work together, and what to consider before investing.
Online Franchise Chronicle editorial · Educational guide · 12 October 2026

Franchising allows an independent operator to use a brand and an established business system under a contractual agreement. The franchisor provides the framework; the franchisee runs the business subject to the terms of that agreement.
An established name does not remove commercial risk. Initial fees, ongoing royalties, operating restrictions and the cost of running the business all matter. Assess the complete agreement rather than the appeal of the brand alone.
The US Federal Trade Commission recommends considering your skills, goals and financial circumstances before investing, and examining the franchise disclosure information carefully. Its guidance is US-specific; disclosure obligations and legal protections vary internationally.
Speak to existing operators, examine independently supported financial information and seek appropriately qualified local legal and financial advice. This guide is general educational information, not investment advice.
