Hilton announced on 3 September 2026 that it has signed its first hotel on the Indonesian island of Batam, with an opening expected in 2028. PT. Sabang Raya Investama will develop the 199-room Hilton Garden Inn Batam City Centre, introducing both the company and the brand to the island.
The agreement extends Hilton’s reach in Indonesia, where the company said it has 18 hotels trading and another 16 in its development pipeline. The Batam project will target business and leisure guests, with meeting facilities forming a substantial part of the planned offer.
City-centre site targets varied travel demand
The hotel site is in Batam’s central business district, with access to Lubuk Baja and Batam Centre, which serve commercial, retail and administrative functions. Hilton also highlighted connections to industrial estates, Hang Nadim International Airport and ferry terminals linking the island directly with Singapore and Malaysia.
According to Hilton, Batam draws short-haul visitors from Singapore and Malaysia for affordable weekend breaks, alongside demand from government, industrial and corporate travel. The company identified meetings and events, golf, wellness and medical-related visits as further sources of demand for the planned property.
Maria Ariizumi, Hilton’s vice president, Development, South East Asia & Australasia, said the island’s proximity to Singapore and Malaysia, transport links and expanding visitor economy supported its development as a business and leisure destination. She described the signing as part of Hilton’s commitment to expanding in Indonesian destinations with growth potential.
Rooms and event facilities
Accommodation will span standard rooms, family rooms and suites. Plans also include a restaurant serving meals throughout the day, a bar, a fitness centre and a swimming pool.
Meeting and event facilities will occupy more than 900 square metres, comprising a ballroom and six meeting rooms. That provision accompanies Hilton’s stated aim of serving corporate travellers and meetings business as well as leisure visitors.
Sukirman Djohan, president director of PT. Sabang Raya Investama, said the partnership would bring an international hospitality brand to Batam. He said the company expected the hotel to meet business and leisure travellers’ needs while contributing to the island’s development as a regional destination.
Brand positioning and loyalty participation
Hilton positions Garden Inn in the upscale segment, with services and amenities aimed at families, solo guests and business travellers. The Batam signing adds to the company’s expansion across South East Asia.
The planned hotel will participate in Hilton Honors when it opens. Members booking through Hilton’s preferred direct channels will have access to benefits including member discounts, standard Wi-Fi without charge, the Hilton Honors app and the option to combine Points and money to pay for a stay.
